Many eDiscovery systems have the capability of grouping ‘forwarded’ or ‘reply’ emails together with their originating email as a list of similar or near-duplicate documents. However, reviewing these similar emails individually in a linear, out-of-context fashion can be very time consuming.
Email Threads creates and displays hierarchy ‘trees’ for each email conversation, identifying the original email and building the various branches from subsequent “send events” such as reply or forward, making it easy to review each email in its original context.
By reconstructing entire email conversation trees and illustrating them graphically, eExamine Email Threads enables reviewers to readily identify potential custodians of interest. Similarly, non-relevant email threads are easily identified and can be quickly culled from the review set.
Rather than relying on metadata, which is potentially missing, corrupt or subject to misinterpretation, Email Threads uses content assessment technology to analyze the content of every email and ensure that the last, or ‘Inclusive’, email of each thread contains all of the available previous emails in that thread. This approach drives significant reductions in review time by allowing users to confidently focus their review efforts on the last email of each thread. Each email in the thread, or the entire conversation tree, can then be bulk coded or tagged.
Some eDiscovery systems can only process electronically generated emails. Because eExamine Email Threads relies on content instead of metadata, scanned images of hard copy emails can easily be combined with electronic email files to form complete email threads.
If an email has been deleted, it no longer exists as a document in a database. However, many deleted emails are still embedded in subsequent ‘reply’ or ‘forward’ email messages. Since these deleted emails no longer have their original metadata, they would not appear in an Outlook or metadata search and would consequently be deemed ‘missing’ by some email threading systems. eExamine Email Threads' content assessment technology enables it to identify and recover the content of these emails and display them as derived emails in their respective email threads.
